Built during the reign of King Phillip II on the suggestion of the Italian engineer Alessandro Massai to defend the mouth of the River Arade, the Santa Catarina de Ribamar Fort is one of the places you simply must visit at Praia da Rocha. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria and was already there when the fort was built. It was maintained throughout the centuries and continues to be a place of contemplation.
